Machines Make The World Go Round
My interest in mechanical engineering began in high school. For me, machines were not just interesting. They were also important because many things in this world move thanks to them. The world basically functions thanks to machines! My interest in machines and mechanical systems grew so strong that I decided to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.
The Japanese Exchange Program That Inspired Me To One Day Work in Japan
Like many people, I was introduced to Japan in childhood through anime. Since then, I have found Japanese culture interesting and even refreshing. While I was a mechanical engineering student, this led me to eventually join a cultural exchange program in Japan years later. Through the Sakura Science Exchange Program, my university granted us the opportunity to visit Japan for a week to experience its science, technology, and culture firsthand through the
In the program, we got to visit various company sites and learn about their products and services. For instance, through one company, I got to witness one way Japan reduced environmental pollution, specifically of water.
Beyond the visits, I also got to experience the hospitality of the Japanese people. They were friendly and helpful, and made me feel welcome at all times. I found the people very helpful, and I admired how they followed the rules. I felt at home.
This experience made me realize that I wanted to work in Japan. Its nurturing yet innovative environment made it a safe, stable place to live and work. Engineers, I thought, would thrive and be able to grow their skills in this country.
Studying Japanese Is Enjoyable
I started studying Japanese through a language school that my university was connected with. Thanks to the classes, I was able to clear JLPT N5, N4, and N3 almost consecutively. Prior to these classes, I did not know any Japanese words at all.
At first, it was difficult. I found writing kanji the most difficult. I was not so good, but I continued learning until I improved. It helped that I had a positive impression of the language. I like speaking and learning Japanese because I find that it has warm, heartfelt words. This enjoyment of the language has helped my studies go well. Until now, I have been studying Japanese, and I plan to take the N2 exam this December.
Learning about FAST OFFER International Through Senpais
I learned about FAST OFFER International through my seniors’ LinkedIn posts. I saw that they were able to secure jobs in Japan with the help of FAST OFFER International. Realizing that there was an opportunity to find a job in Japan through the program, I applied with the help of my language school. I felt hope bloom: there was a way to transform my Japanese exchange program experience to something more long-lasting.
After joining the mendan meeting with the FAST OFFER staff, I felt that I had to practice my Japanese more. My conversation skills were lacking. So, I practiced for two months until I was ready. I once again met with the staff, who told me that I had improved.
We then practiced for the job interviews. With FAST OFFER’s help, I learned a lot of interview preparation techniques, such as how to answer interview questions and how to highlight my skills. Finally, I was ready to join the interviews!
Getting a Job Offer the Same Day as the Interview
Last month, I got to fly to Japan again, not as an exchange program participate, but now as a job hunter. Along with other candidates, FAST OFFER International flew me out to Japan for face-to-face interviews. In 24 hours, I had three interviews. Funnily enough, being back in the country, that feeling of being at home grew stronger – I felt like I was part of the country already!
When I attended my first interview, I was so nervous. Fortunately, the interviewers turned out to be friendly. They just asked questions and even talked to me about anime. For the next company interview, seeing the interviewers lined up and seated, made me feel pressured. They asked questions about my project, which were somewhat difficult to answer. But the hardest interview was with the third company. I even felt that my projects were not enough.
So, you can imagine my surprise when I learned that I passed the third company! It had just been hours since my interview with them. Even I was surprised at how quickly they came to a decision. It’s hard to put into words how I felt at the moment, but I was very happy and thankful. I was sad about my results with the other companies, but I am pleased with where I passed.
The Skills I Want to Enhance Before The Big Move
I will graduate from university next month. Then, next year, I will move to Japan for work. Before then, I aim to clear the N2 level of JLPT and work on my Japanese skills. I also want to improve my mechanical engineering skills. I plan to study and practice every day until it is time to fly out again. Finally, I want to practice my interpersonal skills. I want to be comfortable with meeting new people and mingling with them. I’m giddy with excitement as I take this precious time to prepare for my new life in Japan.
Quick Tips for Aspirants
To learn Japanese, it is important to immerse yourself in the language every day, in a way that is most enjoyable to you. I personally learned a lot using this method. Specifically, I watch anime. Whenever I watch new episodes, I write down new words and look them up. I can pick up new words fast thanks to this practice.
To others also aspiring to work in Japan, always make sure to do research before your interview. When your interviewer asks you a question, you’ll be able to answer! Prepare enough so that you can answer with confidence.
