SUMMARY
Inspired by his roommate’s plans to work in Japan with AtoJ Hirameki’s help, he decided to follow. A few months after enrolling to be a student at AtoJ Hirameki, he was shifted into FAST OFFER International’s job hunting program. On his third try, he secured job offers from three companies.

After graduating with my Civil Engineering degree, I moved from Jalna to Pune to look for a job. To save some money, I moved in with a friend who also studied Civil Engineering. I soon learned that he had a different plan altogether. He had enrolled with AtoJ Hirameki to study Japanese in hopes of landing a job in Japan.

Intrigued, I looked into this plan. In my own research, I found a video of Japanese construction sites where the whole building was fully covered. Construction sites carry a certain level of hazard, but they seem to have minimized it in Japan. It was inspiring to see how Japan’s work culture, rooted in organization and safety, produced such astonishing buildings. I wanted to work in a place like that, too, learn Japanese technologies, make an impact, accomplish great things with a team dedicated to excellence. I dropped my plans to look for a local job in India and enrolled in AtoJ Hirameki.

Shifting from Learning Japanese with AtoJ Hirameki to Jobhunting with FAST OFFER International

Learning with AtoJ Hirameki was awesome. The classes were fun, and the teachers were kind. The classes were intense and thorough, which helped me go from zero Japanese to job-hunting ready in just a few months. To see if I was ready for job hunting, we began with a mock interview with FAST OFFER International. I was so nervous on the day of the exam. I tried to think in Japanese all day in preparation, immersed myself in anime and Youtube Videos, and talked to Japanese friends on HelloTalk!

Soon after passing, FAST OFFER International connected me with two Japanese companies for online interviews. I did my best and prepared for the anticipated questions, but ultimately my level of Japanese fell short. But the experience inspired me to study harder.

Visiting Japan for My Second Try At Job Interviews

Being an AtoJ Hirameki student helped me practice speaking Japanese–key to my goal of becoming a civil engineer in Japan. I also took time to talk about different topics with my friends in Japanese. We also played different kinds of Japanese games, which helped me relax and have fun with the language. In a short time, FAST OFFER International connected me with a new batch of companies. This time, four companies were interested, so I could go to Japan for free!

My Trip to Japan with FAST OFFER International

FAST OFFER International staff picked me up right at the airport and helped me through the whole process smoothly. I felt the weight of the event on my shoulders. Having already failed, I felt pressured to succeed this time, especially with my other friends getting ahead of me. All that made me so nervous and affected my performance in the interviews. After all the interviews concluded and I was waiting in my hotel room, I got the sad news from my Career Advisor. They told me I wasn’t chosen by any of the companies, but I should do my best for the next time.

Sad as I was about the results, the next day definitely cheered me up, with a full day to explore Tokyo. I got to go to Sensouji Otera, Tokyo Tower, and Akihabara, where I was just in awe of the buildings’ designs. Even though I failed that time, I went back to India feeling more determined to work in Japan.

Preparing for the Next Round of Job Interviews

For the next round, I doubled my efforts. I used ChatGPT, used more of HelloTalk, and watched even more anime and Youtube films.I did my best to shadow the characters I watched. More than mastering the language, I needed to become comfortable and relaxed. So, when the time came for the next four companies interested in me, I wasn’t just prepared; I was smiling.

My Redemption Arc: Getting It On Three

Smiling a lot in the interviews was a game changer. IT gave my personality the best shot at winning over my interviewers. After the first round, I passed with three out of four companies. Soon, all three of those companies gave me job offers. I was so happy!  After the photo sessions were done, I called my family and told them the great news. I finally succeeded!

Smiling with my career advisor!

My Future in Japan: From AtoJ Hirameki Student to Civil Engineer in Japan

Needing to choose between three great Japanese companies, I talked to my friends again. My former roommate told me about the company he was now working at: the location and work culture were all amazing. At that point, of course, I trusted him, so I chose to join the same company.

On top of that, this company would allow me to work in several different engineering fields. They have projects in architecture and civil engineering where they construct buildings, roads, bridges, public facilities, factories, warehouses, and other civil engineering projects. Apart from big public spaces, they also work in residential buildings: from designing and constructing detached houses to renovating, repairing, and disaster-proofing existing homes. Their involvement in the different facets of engineering would surely help me grow as a technical engineer.

During my internship, I really loved being onsite, solving problems, and that feeling of accomplishment. I’m looking forward to feeling that again in Japan, while I’m breathing their fresh air.
