SUMMARY |
A boy never understood why his sister studied Japanese so hard until he watched her plane take off for Japan. Inspired, he followed her path, joined the same language program, and eventually landed a job in Japan. Now, he understands her choice and proudly walks in it too. |
I Decided My Future the Moment My Sister’s Flight Took Off
My sister dreamed of working in Japan, so she joined the Japanese class offered through the FAST OFFER International program by ASIA to JAPAN Co. Ltd. Watching her study so hard, I often wondered, “Why doesn’t she hang out with friends like others her age? Isn’t she missing out?”
I didn’t understand—until the day we saw her off at the airport. As her plane took off, it hit me: her dedication had paid off, and her dream was now real. Right then, I decided to follow in her footsteps and enrolled in the same program to secure a computer science job in Japan from India.
Starting My Journey with FAST OFFER International Program
Since my sister had successfully secured her job through the FAST OFFER International program, my family and I are very confident about the program to help me secure a computer science job in Japan. All I must do is study Japanese, tell the ASIA to JAPAN staff about my preferences, and wait for their arrangement.
Japanese Learning Is Not That Easy, But I Did It
At first, learning Japanese was tough for me. I struggled to keep up and even failed the N5 mock test. This made me realize that I needed to work harder. Thankfully, I received strong support and motivation from my teacher, family, and friends.
To turn things around, I reorganized my daily routine. I attended afternoon classes, spent time with family, worked out at the gym, joined evening Japanese lessons before dinner, and played sports with friends. Late at night, I dedicated three hours to revising what I had learned.
Beyond class materials, I listened to Japanese podcasts on Spotify and practiced speaking through HelloTalk. To keep myself inspired, I even decorated my study table with marker drawings of my favorite anime character, “Crayon Shin-chan“, and figures like Sakura. These small touches kept me motivated. Group study with friends who shared the same career goals also helped a lot, and it made learning both effective and enjoyable.
Job Hunting For a Computer Science Job in Japan
After putting in a lot of effort to improve my Japanese, I was finally ready to apply for computer science jobs in Japan. I had signed up for the monthly interview process and checked my email every day, hoping for a job interview offer. Ironically, the offer came when I had stopped checking! Unlike others, I had only one week to prepare for the interview. The pressure I felt was intense. I spent late nights studying, especially after researching the company and realizing how much I wanted to work there.
Thankfully, I had strong support. My teacher, sister, and friends gave me great advice — like staying focused on the questions asked, keeping answers concise, and treating the interview as a natural conversation.
I also received valuable guidance from my mentor and the ASIA to JAPAN staff. They helped me refine my answers, practiced mock interviews with me, and gave me helpful feedback right up to the big day.
Despite the short prep time, I was relieved that I was able to understand most of the questions and was able to respond well. Still, I clearly remember struggling when the interviewer spoke too quickly or asked complex questions. I knew I hadn’t done perfectly.
After the interview, I couldn’t sleep. I was anxious about the results. But perseverance pays off — I passed the interview! The joy and relief we felt were indescribable!
No Pain No Gain
If you’re truly determined to work in Japan, be prepared to make sacrifices. Consistency is the key to turning that dream into reality. One phrase that kept me going, and one I want to share with anyone aspiring to work abroad, is akiramenai (あきらめない) — “don’t give up.”
Tips For Juniors?
- Don’t just rely on attending classes; self-study is essential. Whether it’s for landing a job or mastering the language, your personal effort makes a huge difference.
- Believe in your hard work. It may not pay off immediately, but it will in time.
- Stay positive. A positive mindset attracts positive outcomes.
- Treat the interview as a challenge, not a test. Trust in the effort you’ve put in, and you’ll face it with confidence.
Can’t Wait To Go To Japan
Since graduating, I’ve been focused solely on my future life working in Japan. My sister moved to Japan a year and a half ago, and she often tells me how amazing the country is, and how it is high-tech, clean, well-organized, and filled with respectful people. I’ve also seen Japan’s beauty through Instagram, and even though I haven’t been there yet, I already have a great impression of the country.
One thing that especially excites me is the hanabi taikai (fireworks festivals). While we have fireworks during Diwali back home, the atmosphere in Japan feels completely different. I’ve always dreamed of standing on a bridge in the summer, watching the fireworks light up the night sky.
This October, I’ll begin working in my computer science job in Japan. For the first time, I’ll be celebrating Diwali in a foreign country. A senior of mine who’s now living in Tokyo has kindly invited me to his home to celebrate the festival. I’ve also been invited by a Japanese friend I met online to join a Christmas celebration, complete with winter illuminations and snow. I’m truly looking forward to experiencing these special moments in Japan.
FAST OFFER CAREER GUIDE: How To Start Learning Japanese As A Beginner
If you plan to work in Japan, one of the most crucial things you must do is learn Japanese. Some of our successful candidates start from zero to being fluent. Here are some helpful tips to kickstart your journey into learning Japanese as a beginner.
Utilize Children’s Learning Materials
Think of yourself as a child learning to speak and write for the first time. Begin by learning basic phrases like “Ohayō” (good morning) and “Arigatou” (thank you). From there, you can learn more words using children’s learning materials like flash cards and storybooks. Children’s workbooks can also help you learn how to write and pronounce the Japanese Alphabet (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji).
Try The Shadowing Technique
Shadowing is a technique where you listen and repeat the words while trying your best to mimic the right intonations. Choose an anime, J-drama, or a livestreamer that you like and try this technique with familiar phrases. Over time, shadowing will help you speak Japanese more naturally.
Find Your Community
Practicing with peers who want to learn Japanese is a good way to further improve your language skills, improving your comprehension and response speed. A lot of our candidates found that using HelloTalk to practice with fluent and native Japanese speakers helps with real-time practice.
Enroll In Free Japanese Classes
Having access to a trained instructor is a great way to get expert feedback to help correct your grammar, guide you with correct usage of words, and give additional cultural context. FAST OFFER International provides free Japanese classes and career training programs here.
