A Week in Japan That Changed Everything: The Turning Point from Engineering Student in India to Automotive Engineer in Japan
I came to Japan for the first time in the late summer of 2025 through the Sakura Science Exchange Program. It’s a one-week educational program for students with a strong interest in Japanese culture and innovation — which totally describes me!
As a child, I enjoyed watching lots of anime. But what truly sparked my curiosity was seeing my uncle’s Japanese car. Features such as smart keys, power windows, and electronic controls impressed me because they were so advanced at the time. That early exposure left an impression on me that Japanese technology is innovative and reliable.
As my interest grew, I began learning Japanese. One thing that surprised me was discovering similarities between Japanese grammar and my native language, Tamil. This made the learning process even more enjoyable. During university, I also met senior students who went on to have successful careers in Japan. Hearing about their experiences gave me a clearer picture of the opportunities available for engineers. It motivated me to explore the possibility of building my own career there.
Along with this, I also became a member of the Japanese club in my college. I served as the Joint Secretary. The experience was pivotal for my journey. It strengthened my interest in Japanese language and culture, as well as developed my leadership and communication skills.
My experience with the Sakura Science Exchange Program: Interesting lectures and company visits
Driven by my interest in becoming an automotive engineer in Japan, I applied for the Sakura Science Exchange Program and was fortunate to be selected. During the week-long visit, I attended lectures by professors, explored research laboratories, and observed advanced technologies used. I was particularly impressed by the hands-on learning environment!
The program also included visits to leading Japanese companies. For the first time, I was able to see firsthand how Japanese engineers approach problem-solving in real-world settings. These experiences helped me understand why Japan is recognized globally for its technological leadership.
Beyond academics and technology, I had the opportunity to interact with local students. I experienced daily life, and learned more about Japanese customs and values. Those conversations and experiences gave me confidence that I could adapt to living and working in Japan.
As I learned more about the country, I became especially inspired by the professionalism I observed everywhere. The emphasis on punctuality and teamwork closely with the type of engineer I wanted to become. By the end of the program, I was more determined than ever to pursue my goal of transforming myself from an engineering student in India to an automotive engineer in Japan.
Job Hunting Experience with FAST OFFER: How I Went from an Engineering Student in India to Automotive Engineer in Japan
Once I became certain that I wanted to build my career in Japan, I began searching for opportunities. I learned about a recruitment platform called FAST OFFER that connects foreign talents, even those who are still students, with Japanese employers.
One of the things I appreciated most about the process was the personalized guidance I received. Since I had always been fascinated by automobiles and automotive technology, I was introduced to an opportunity with a Japanese manufacturer in the automotive sector. What I Did to Prepare for My Online Interview with a Japanese Automotive Company
Before my interview, I participated in multiple mock interview sessions with an experienced FAST OFFER mentor. These practice sessions were intensive and often lasted several hours. Even though it was quite taxing, I’m grateful for it! It allowed me to refine my Japanese communication skills. Here’s what I learned:
- Direct, proper communication. I learned how to communicate my ideas more clearly and structure my answers in a way that was easy for interviewers to follow. I also practiced answering technical questions related to my engineering background and learned how to highlight my strengths in a manner that would resonate with Japanese employers.
- Thoughtful reverse questions. Another valuable lesson was learning how to prepare thoughtful questions for the interviewers. This helped me demonstrate genuine interest in the company and the role while creating more meaningful conversations during the interview process.
- Correct interview demeanor. I learned to maintain a positive and professional attitude. How to correctly smile in front of the camera and keep the proper posture.
How My Job Interview for an Automotive Engineering Role in Japan Went
After weeks of preparation, the interview finally arrived! The recruitment process consisted of two interview rounds. Most of the discussions focused on my engineering background, technical skills, project experience, and how I could contribute to the organization.
They looked into how I think as an engineer
One of the main topics during the interviews was my final year engineering project: an automated hydroponic cultivation system designed to improve agricultural efficiency.
Rather than focusing only on the technical details, the interviewers were interested in understanding my problem-solving approach. They asked questions about the challenges I faced during development, how I overcame technical obstacles, and how the skills I gained from the project could be applied in a professional engineering environment. This taught me that Japanese employers often want to understand not only what you built, but also how you think as an engineer.
Although I had practiced extensively beforehand, I still felt nervous when the interview began. However, the mock interviews I had completed during my preparation helped me stay calm and organized. As the conversation progressed, I became more comfortable discussing my projects, experiences, and career goals.
Answering a tough question with a touch of humor
One question I still remember was when the interviewers asked what I thought would be the most difficult part of living in Japan. I answered honestly that adapting to the colder weather might be challenging, but I joked that I could always wear a coat and continue working hard. The comment made everyone laugh and helped create a relaxed atmosphere.
Looking back, I believe the interview was successful because I was able to demonstrate more than just technical knowledge. Through my refined communication skills (thanks to those hours of mock interviews with my mentor), I showed that I was ready to take the next step in my journey from an engineering student in India to an automotive engineer in Japan.

After going through the interview, I finally received the news I had been hoping for: a job offer in Japan. The position was exactly the kind of role I had been working toward throughout my university years. My work will focus on embedded systems and software development for automotive electronic control units. The opportunity felt like a perfect match for my skills and career goals!
Looking Forward to Life and Work in Japan
I am excited about starting my engineering career in Japan! But beyond work, I am looking forward to exploring different parts of the country, learning more about Japanese culture, and experiencing daily life firsthand.
I hope to visit famous destinations and attend automotive and motorsport events. As someone who has dreamed about Japan since childhood, I am excited to finally experience the country not as a visitor, but as a professional engineer building a career there.
What Helped Me Achieve My Goal: The Importance of Learning Japanese
If there is one lesson I learned throughout this journey, it is that consistency matters more than speed. From the beginning, I focused on building a strong foundation in Japanese. I spent roughly a year studying JLPT N5 and another year studying JLPT N4 before progressing to higher levels. Rather than rushing through the language, I concentrated on steady improvement and daily practice.
One habit that helped me the most was studying consistently every day. Even on busy days, I made time to review vocabulary, practice kanji, or listen to Japanese-language content. I regularly used podcasts to improve my listening skills and spent time writing and reviewing kanji to strengthen my reading ability.
Looking back, I believe that learning Japanese was one of the most important factors in helping me become an automotive engineer in Japan. Technical skills helped me qualify for the role, but Japanese language skills helped me communicate with interviewers on a deeper level!
For anyone hoping to follow a similar path, my biggest advice is simple: stay consistent and don’t give up.
