My Experienced Uncle’s Recommendation for Electrical Engineering Jobs: Japan

When I expressed my desire to work abroad, my uncle, with all his wisdom from working as a biotechnology researcher from all around the world, from South Korea, Japan, Germany, to the United States, urged me to go for Japan. He told me that Japan’s technological advancements and abundant job opportunities would benefit me as an Electrical and Electronics Engineering major at SRM University. I was sold. Convinced, I pursued working in Japan as an Indian expat by enrolling in Japanese classes at my university. Thankfully, SRM University offers Japanese classes to get me started.

Meeting FAST OFFER International Through SRM University

Enrolling in the Japanese classes also led my university to recommend ASIA to JAPAN‘s FAST OFFER International. Signing up with them connected my Japanese classes and job hunt seamlessly. When my Japanese was just enough, I got my first interview invitation. It was thrilling but that was just the beginning! Being selected for an in-person interview in Japan made me even more excited. Though I was nervous at first, I was determined to give my best effort.

In February, I visited Japan for the first time to attend an interview through FAST OFFER International’s regular sponsored job interview events. It was an unforgettable experience. Even though I was focused on the tasks ahead, I was still able to appreciate what I saw in Japan. I was particularly impressed by Tokyo’s towering buildings and the discipline and politeness of Japanese people.

I Needed to Fail to Succeed: Lessons I’ve Learned Going For Electrical Engineering Jobs in Japan

My first interview with a Japanese company was challenging, as I didn’t know how to respond properly. However, with advice from my FAST OFFER International mentor, I continued taking interviews, learning from each experience. After failing three times, I made sure to carefully review the feedback provided by my advisors.

I received four interview opportunities in total. I failed the first three, but on the fourth attempt, I finally succeeded. The moment I received my job offer was truly unforgettable. I was overwhelmed with joy and immediately shared the news with my family and friends. Their heartfelt congratulations made the achievement even more special.

I’m so thankful I didn’t give up and instead, grew from every failure until I reached my goal. In fact, I feel those failures may have been necessary. Through this process, I discovered key strategies for success:

Key Strategies for Japanese Job Interview Success

  • Stay relaxed
  • Listen carefully
  • Answer calmly and with a smile
  • Engaging in conversations with the interviewers about the company
  • Be confident
  • Be confident but hone
  • Be prepared!

The Foundation of Success: Preparation!

My experience has shown me that a well-prepared and composed approach leads to success. What let me implement these strategies is all the preparation I did before the interviews. Knowing I’ve done enough instilled a calmness and confidence that can’t be faked. My confidence enabled me to relax and stay in the moment. Working hard on my preparation helped me be honest, too. I didn’t need to lie or make stuff up because I knew the answer. When I didn’t know the answer, I didn’t hesitate to say, “I don’t know.” Honesty and confidence left a positive impression on my interviewers.

Here are some tips for your Japanese job interview preparation:

  • Research the companies well. To prepare for interviews, I extensively researched the companies I applied to, studying their roles, responsibilities, meeting structures, and organizational departments.
  • Take advantage of the one-on-one mentoring mock interview sessions with FAST OFFER International. I practiced answering potential questions and received valuable insights from my mentor.
  • Engage with friends. In addition to mock sessions, I practiced with friends, discussing strategies and refining my responses.

Experiencing Japanese Kindness Even In Japanese Interviews

Another surprising factor that helped me succeed: was my interviewer!

During one of my interviews, the interviewer mentioned having been to India, which surprised me. Their kindness made me feel at ease, helping me overcome my nervousness. After the interview, I felt touched and hopeful that the interviewer was genuinely interested in me. This experience gave me newfound confidence that pushed me towards success.

Future Aspirations: Making the Best of My Electrical Engineering Job in Japan

Learning doesn’t stop at securing a job offer. Navigating my career and personal life will be easier the better I am at Japanese. I have been studying the language at university and plan to continue learning at a Japanese language school in India before joining my company.

As I prepare to join my company, I am eager to contribute to the team and further develop my skills. Although initially I wasn’t sure about my career path, I now aspire to grow within the company. Over the next five years, I aim to deepen my technical knowledge and become a top-tier employee. In ten years, I hope to refine my expertise further and mentor junior colleagues, helping them navigate their own careers.

Looking back, I am grateful for the journey and the support I received along the way. The experience has strengthened my confidence, and empowered me to grab my future in Japan with both hands!
