Civil Engineering in Japan: How My Interest and Passion Led Me to Work Abroad

I come from a family of civil engineers. When I was 10 years old, I had a chance to visit and observe a construction site from afar. And so, from a young age, I became fascinated with civil engineering. That early experience made me realize that civil engineers don’t just construct buildings and infrastructure — they help people achieve their dreams. From that moment, I knew I wanted to be one.

Later on, I found out about Japan’s advanced engineering technologies, like earthquake-resistant construction. Learning about these made me feel that Japan was the ideal place to grow as a civil engineer. During college, I learned about the opportunities to work in Japan as a civil engineer through one of my classes. What began as a passing thought now become a clear dream, and I am determined to make it come true.

It wasn’t just Japan’s engineering industry that made me want to work in Japan. I also had a fondness for Japanese culture and philosophy. My brother-in-law frequently traveled to Japan for business, and hearing from him about the Japanese people’s sincerity, punctuality, and kindness left a strong impression on me. At the same time, finishing a book about ikigai (a reason for being) deepened my connection to Japanese values and way of thinking.

Facing the Challenge of Learning Japanese

If I wanted to make my dream of working in Japan as a civil engineer a reality, I would need to learn Japanese. There was simply no way around it.

Learning a completely different language was extremely challenging for me. There were many moments when I struggled, but my teacher always encouraged me to keep going.

I followed a strict routine and studied whenever I could — even during short breaks between classes — spending around 4–5 hours a day memorizing hiragana, katakana, and kanji, and learning useful phrases. I was fortunate to have a roommate who was also studying Japanese, so we practiced conversation together every day and supported each other with the shared goal of securing a job in Japan.

Additionally, to improve my spoken Japanese, I regularly practice speaking with native speakers through the HelloTalk application

Finding Career Direction in Japan Through FAST OFFER

While I was attending the Hirameki Japanese language course, I encountered the FAST OFFER international program. The FAST OFFER team visited India and conducted mock interviews for students who want to work in Japan. In my first mock interview, I received a C rating, while some of my classmates performed better.

Rather than feeling discouraged, I used this result as motivation to improve. By my second mock interview, my score improved to C+. This progress gave me confidence! Eventually, after taking time to improve even more, I was offered job interview invitations by three companies in Japan. This means I’m going to Tokyo!

From Anxiety to Achievement: Securing a Job Offer in Japan

After I got the job interview invitations, I began practicing for hours every day to prepare. On top of this, I also needed to pack for my trip. It was an exciting time in my life!

Landed in Tokyo!

Traveling to Japan for civil engineer job interviews was nerve-racking, but the FAST OFFER staff supported me throughout the process. On the first day of interviews, I was extremely nervous and couldn’t perform as well as I had expected. That evening, I called my teacher in India, who motivated me and helped restore my confidence. For interviews, confidence is essential, especially when facing multiple interviewers. Even though I was extremely nervous, I learned just to trust my preparation and believe in myself.

The following day, I faced another interview, including one with a company president. The thought of interviewing with the head of a company made me even more nervous, but this time I performed with confidence and made the interview flow.

Later that day, I received a call asking me to return to the FAST OFFER office. Good news, I was selected by two companies! One of them was my dream company, and I accepted the offer immediately. I couldn’t believe it! I was overwhelmed with emotion, and I couldn’t stop crying.

A New Beginning in Japan: Excited to Start My Civil Engineering Job Abroad

After receiving my offer letter, I visited my company in Shizuoka Prefecture. I was impressed by how the company helps and contributes to the local community.

I was also warmly received by my future co-workers. One small but unforgettable moment for me was when my phone battery was almost dead while traveling back to Tokyo. One of the staff members noticed and kindly bought me a new power bank — a simple thing that perfectly reflected the kindness of Japanese people.

As I prepare to start my career in Japan, my goal is to continue improving my Japanese and fully embrace Japanese culture. And I hope to apply Japanese values such as punctuality, kindness, and sincerity in both my work and daily life.
