Why I Chose to Work in Japan as a Chinese Mechatronics Student
One of the reasons why I chose to study engineering is its ability to make everyday life better. Bridges connect people. Airplanes can take you to distant lands. Even the simplest appliances quietly transform daily routines. In a nutshell, engineering makes life better.
With that in mind, I set my sights on working in Japan. I’ve always been impressed by Japan’s advanced engineering and manufacturing industries. Personally, I also have a strong interest in Japanese culture. I love watching anime and admire the kaizen philosophy of continuous improvement.
On top of that, in my opinion, Japanese companies offer better work-life balance. The working environment in China is quite competitive and requires long hours. I feel that I would have a more comfortable time working in Japan. And so, with all these factors, searching for a job offer in Japan as a mechatronics engineering student feels like a natural next step for me.
Tips for Self-Studying Japanese from a Chinese Mechatronics Student
Before I got a job offer in Japan as a mechatronics engineering student, I self-studied Japanese for three years and now hold a JLPT N1 certificate. Here are some of my tips:
- Take advantage of the online courses available in China. I learned Japanese by watching free online courses. One website that I go to is Moji Jisho, which I find really helpful for Chinese learners. Another resource that helped me is the Bilibili Channel called Tobi Sensei.
- Practice real-time conversations. I feel that for Chinese learners, passing written tests is quite easy due to the similarity between the Chinese and Japanese languages. However, spoken Japanese is hard to master. Even now, this is something that I’m still working on. To address this, I am considering taking spoken Japanese or business Japanese courses. My goal is to be able to communicate smoothly with Japanese engineers once I enter the factory and work in a professional environment.
- Be persistent. Learning a new language requires persistence. You have to continuously apply what you learn, or else you may lose your progress every time you stop.
How FAST OFFER Helped Me Land a Job Offer in Japan as a Chinese Mechatronics Student
The moment I made up my mind to start a career in Japan, I began searching online for platforms that support foreign engineering students. That’s when I discovered FAST OFFER. I started searching first on RedNote. I came across FAST OFFER’s account, and after reading the success stories, I felt it was exactly what I needed — a platform that directly connects engineering students with Japanese companies.
After signing up, I found the process to be highly efficient and very fast. Soon, I was preparing for job interviews with my assigned career advisor! I did some mock interviews and prepared my presentation about my final year project. What’s great is that I got some personalized feedback. I was told that my enthusiasm was admirable but that sometimes I get ahead of myself, and got advice that it would be better if I spoke calmly. After going through the preparations, FAST OFFER gave me a lot of confidence that I could land a job offer in Japan as a mechatronics engineering student.
Going to Tokyo for My Job Interview: Putting My Japanese Skills to the Test

When I finished all my preparations from the FAST OFFER program, I got an invitation to travel to Japan to attend the job interview. To be honest, I was quite confident about my language ability before going. However, when I arrived and met other international students from Egypt, India, and other countries, I realized I was not as strong as I had thought.
Even though some of the Indian students only had JLPT N3, their spoken Japanese was much better than mine. Their English was also better. In the dormitory, when we talked together, I often could not fully join the conversations. The Egyptian and Indian students could communicate easily, while I mostly just listened. It was quite embarrassing at the time. Still, I kept pushing myself and did my best to continue speaking and participating, even when it was difficult.
From this experience, I learned an important lesson: spoken Japanese ability is extremely important. More than test scores, it is essential to continuously improve speaking and listening skills.
Despite the challenges, I also had very positive experiences. During my final interview with the company, the interviewers were incredibly welcoming and professional. They asked me some really interesting questions, like how my final year project will benefit their engineering process and how I would be able to adjust to living in Japan. Their attitude made me feel respected, and it strengthened my belief that this is the kind of environment I would like to work in.

Finally Getting a Job Offer in Japan as a Mechatronics Engineering Student
During the interview process, I casually mentioned that it was my birthday. After the interview ended, my mentors surprised me with birthday presents. I was genuinely touched by their kindness. Later, when I returned to the dormitory, my friends from India and Egypt also gave me small birthday gifts. It turned what could have been a stressful interview day into one of the most memorable and heartwarming experiences of my time in Japan.

But the best birthday surprise of all? I got a job offer! I was in the waiting room, and my career advisor came in and told me the good news. It was a complete surprise! I did not expect it at all. At that time, I honestly felt I had performed poorly in the interview. I often got stuck when answering questions and sometimes could not clearly hear what the interviewers were saying, which made me doubt myself. But I’m so glad it all worked out!
Exciting Times Ahead: Looking Forward to Working in Japan
The company I got a job offer with will allow me to do a job rotation. This meant moving between different areas, such as engine design and marketing.
When I went for a company tour, I saw that the production line was highly automated and much more advanced than I had expected. The staff was very enthusiastic and welcoming. They were patient in explaining how the factory line worked and shared details about the system with genuine passion.

And there’s one more thing that I’m excited about: the view from the factory. You could directly see Fuji san! Amazing, right? The overall environment is also good! I could imagine myself going cycling and jogging on weekends. That lifestyle really excites me! I have always been curious about living independently in another country. I believe this experience will help me grow both personally and professionally.
