Why I Wanted to Become a Design Engineer in Japan
When people describe me, they usually use three words: quiet, sincere, and determined. I’ve always believed that once I commit to something, I should give it my full attention until it’s finished. That mindset has guided me throughout my studies, my Japanese language journey, and, eventually, my design engineering job-hunting experience in Japan.
But what set me on this path? As a mechanical engineering student, I’ve always been fascinated with cars and bikes. During college, one of my seniors explained that Japan is one of the best places in the world to build a career in manufacturing, automobiles, and automation. I was fascinated! In fact, one of my favorite cars is the Toyota Supra!
From the get-go, he encouraged me to start learning Japanese because it would open many opportunities. At the same time, I was already a fan of anime. One Piece inspired me with its themes of perseverance, friendship, and pursuing ambitious goals. Initial D further fueled my passion for Japanese automotive engineering! This career advice and my interest in anime ultimately motivated me to pursue working in Japan seriously.
Preparing for Design Engineer Job Hunting Experience in Japan: My Japanese Language Learning Journey
My college offered students the opportunity to learn basic Japanese. I didn’t want to miss that chance, so, of course, I signed up! However, learning Japanese wasn’t easy. I struggled a lot during the beginner level. But instead of giving up, I reflected on what I had done wrong and started over. After changing my mindset, I stopped relying only on textbooks. I also studied through online resources, videos, and additional materials, which helped me improve much faster.
For beginners, I have one piece of advice: don’t be afraid of kanji. Many learners think kanji is the hardest part of Japanese, but creating mental pictures for each character made it much easier for me to remember them.
How FAST OFFER International Helped Me Succeed in My Design Engineer Job Hunting Experience in Japan
I first learned about FAST OFFER International through my Japanese language institute, SSJLTC Karur. They said it’s a program to connect international talents with job opportunities in Japan for free. I immediately registered!
After registering, I was paired with a career advisor who became one of the biggest contributors to a smooth job-hunting experience for a design engineer job in Japan. Before the interviews, we held several practice sessions. Each meeting helped me improve.
Here are the important tips she gave me:
- Research each company thoroughly. I studied the company’s website. I wanted to understand its business, values, and products so I could explain exactly why I wanted to work there.
- Give deeper and more specific answers. Instead of generic answers, I try to relate my answer to the company’s needs and also take it as an opportunity to showcase my talents.
- Speak confidently instead of being nervous. Study the company’s website. I wanted to understand its business, values, and products, so I also spent a lot of time practicing my self-introduction. Since Japanese interviews almost always begin with self-introductions, I practiced mine every day until it became natural. Once I could confidently introduce myself, answering the rest of the interview questions became much easier. I could explain exactly why I wanted to work there.
- Smile naturally during interviews. Believe it or not, this is important to give a good impression!
My Design Engineer Job Hunting Experience with a Japanese Company
I attended my interviews online. During my first interview, the interviewer complimented my Japanese language ability. Hearing that made me realize that all the effort I’d invested in studying Japanese had been worth it.
The interview focused on questions about my motivations for working in Japan, such as:
- Tell us about yourself.
- Why Japan?
- Why our company?
- What are your engineering projects?
I also presented my university project using presentation slides and answered technical questions related to it. My advice for future candidates is simple: Don’t think of it as an interview. Think of it as a conversation. When you focus on having a genuine conversation, you become more relaxed, and your answers feel much more natural.
Receiving My Job Offer for a Design Engineer Job
I’ll never forget the day I received the news. I was at my Japanese language institute with my friends, constantly refreshing the FAST OFFER page while waiting for the results. When I saw that I had been selected, I was overwhelmed with happiness. The first thing I did was tell the friend sitting beside me. He had supported me throughout my journey, so celebrating together made the moment even more meaningful. It remains one of the happiest days of my life!
Looking Ahead: My Future as a Design Engineer in Japan
I wanted to work in design engineering because I had experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD. Fortunately, the company that selected me offered me exactly that opportunity.
As an engineer, I’m excited to learn from one of the world’s leading automotive industries. I believe that Japan’s advanced manufacturing technologies will allow me to gain valuable experience in automotive design.
And outside of work, I’m looking forward to finally visiting the places that inspired many of the anime I grew up watching. It feels like I’m stepping into the next chapter of my own story!
