“How long does it take to learn Japanese?” is probably the first question that pops into your head the moment you start dreaming of working in Japan. You might have that odd wish of an English-speaking job in Japan, but research would quickly show you how limiting that would be to your career. The reality is that Japanese companies need you to speak Japanese to pass the job interviews and to operate within the workplace. So, if you want to work in Japan, perhaps the most important skill to gain is speaking Japanese. 

One of the fastest ways to learn Japanese to get a job in Japan is through FAST OFFER International or our partner language learning center in India, AtoJ Hirameki, which can take you from zero Japanese to conversational Japanese, but also help you transition to job hunting smoothly. 

How Long Does It Take to Learn Japanese? Can you learn Japanese in one year? 

You can have job interview-ready conversational Japanese in about 1 year with FAST OFFER International. 

In total, students typically complete around 266 hours of guided learning before reaching the Interview Ready stage. Most classes are conducted three times per week, with each class lasting two hours. Under a typical schedule, students can become Interview Ready in approximately one year. The actual timeline may vary depending on attendance, self-study habits, academic commitments, holidays, and individual learning pace.

How many hours does it take to learn Japanese based on the FAST OFFER International Japanese Classes Curriculum?

For the Japanese learning timeline, we recommend using CEFR descriptors as the primary benchmark rather than JLPT levels. Other individual factors that affect your speed of learning Japanese: 

• Commitment to attending online Japanese classes 
• Signing up for the classes on time! (Pay attention to our registration deadlines) 
• Daily practice outside class hours 
• Type of class you join (there are intensive classes with a shorter time frame) 
• Engaging a supportive community by attending events or practicing conversation with your peers, classmates, or teachers

• Your genuine interest in Japanese media (anime, podcasts, games, etc.)

How to Get a Job in Japan After Learning Japanese?

Every applicant in FAST OFFER International is required to have at least conversational Japanese before we match them with companies. Here’s what can happen as soon as you have conversational Japanese.  

How to Qualify for the FAST OFFER International Program? Screening with Your Career Advisor 

If you’ve already signed up for the program through the Japanese classes, you will be funneled into a screening process with a Career Advisor to determine if you are job interview ready. This is also the time we fully get to know your career goals and motivations—facets of your background that will affect what kind of companies we match you with. 

Perfect Japanese is not required. 

“Interview Ready” Japanese does NOT mean speaking perfect Japanese. Rather, it means being able to communicate your thoughts effectively, participate confidently in an interview, and demonstrate the attitude, character, and teamwork skills that Japanese companies value. Strong Japanese ability alone does not guarantee success. Many students with less-than-perfect Japanese perform very well because they demonstrate sincerity, adaptability, teamwork, and a positive attitude. 

Japanese ability and technical expertise are certainly important, but they are not the primary factors Career Advisors evaluate. Instead, they are ultimately trying to determine whether the candidate can work effectively as part of a team in a Japanese company and whether they are a good-natured person who can build positive relationships with colleagues. Sometimes, you may be asked to schedule another session after some time to work on feedback in particular to your case. 

Some of the key things Career Advisors look for to determine if you are ready for Japanese Job Interviews: 

• Ability to communicate and respond appropriately in Japanese 
• Willingness to listen, collaborate, and learn 
• Positive attitude and professional mindset 
• Genuine motivation to work in Japan 
• Ability to work as part of a team 
• Good character and interpersonal skills 

Your Career Advisor Will Be with You Through Your Job-Hunting Journey 

Once a Career Advisor sees you are ready for Japanese job interviews, your official job hunt begins, which will include: 

1. Career conversation – where you will set your goals and expectations with your career advisor. 
2. Profile polishing – you will need to submit a self-introduction video and your final year project. 
3. Company matching – your career advisor will show a shortlist of profiles of Japanese companies. Japanese companies will then choose who they want to interview for the upcoming FAST OFFER International monthly interview event. Your career advisor will help coordinate the resulting job interviews. 
4. Job interview preparation – your career advisor will brief you on the companies that want to interview you and coach you on how to do deep company research. You can then schedule mock interview/training sessions with your career advisor. 
5. Job interviews* – For those with 1-2 companies interested, you may take the interviews online. For 3+ interested companies, you will be given the option to fly to Tokyo, Japan, for free for 6 days for in-person interviews. Throughout your career, your advisor will help coordinate and keep you updated. 
6. Job offer – typically**, if you pass the second round of interviews with a Japanese company, your career advisor will advise you of the job offer. Results come fast, typically* on the same day of the last interview. You will be given two weeks to sign the job offer.** The contract will typically** indicate a join date in the following year’s April or October. This is also when you can share your success stories on our website! 
7. Transition to Japan – the company you are signing with will help you with the visa requirements. Some documents expire and must be processed within 3 months before your flight. Part of this preparation is acquiring a Japanese number, address, and bank details so you are ready for life in Japan once you fly. 

*The number of companies that choose you depends on several variables: 

• The number and kind of Japanese companies looking for candidates at that time 
• The month of the event (February and July are peak months for the New Graduate Recruitment System, as companies gear up for the yearly mass hiring dates) 
• The Job market demand for your specific field of study 
• The proximity of your final year project to the nature of the company 

**Indicated time frame is typical, but there are plenty of cases outside of this average. 

How Long Is the Whole Journey from Learning Japanese to Getting a Job Offer?   

Based on FAST OFFER International’s Survey of Successful Students from 2025-2026: 21 Months from Your First Japanese Class to Job Offer 

From January 2025 to June 2026, FAST OFFER International has had an ongoing optional survey from successful applicants to measure their journey. One of the key things we measured was the time it takes from the first attempt at learning Japanese to successfully getting a job offer. Please note that this time frame goes beyond learning Japanese and includes the job-hunting portion. 

35 Months: Overall Average 

Interpreting data from 160 respondents from 16 different countries, on average, it took 35 months from their first attempt at learning Japanese before getting a job offer. 

47 Months: Only Self-Studied 

Those who only relied on self-studying took, on average, 47 months. 

21 Months: Under AtoJ Hirameki or FAST OFFER International’s free Japanese classes 

The 88 respondents who participated in either AtoJ Hirameki or FAST OFFER International’s free Japanese classes only took 21 months. This means they started their first Japanese class in their third year and got a job offer at the tail end of their final year.

If you are an active university student studying a bachelor’s or Master’s degree in STEM, who wants to work in Japan, you might be eligible for our free Japanese classes. • Worldwide Free Japanese Classes 
  • If you have at least a JLPT N5 certificate, you can qualify for our worldwide Japanese classes that open all year round as soon as there is a certain number of qualified applicants. 
• University-Partnered Country-Specific Classes 
  • We have partnered with several universities from all around Asia (Japan, Malaysia, Egypt, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam) for JLPT N5-N3 classes. Some universities allow our classes to be credited. You do NOT need to be enrolled in the partner university to qualify. However, these classes have very strict deadlines for registration.

Meet Miki Takahashi sensei, head of FAST OFFER International’s Japanese Classes Program. Her 26 years of experience in Japanese language education, 14 spent overseas, help her understand her students’ perspectives, gently bridging cultural gaps. 

Miki sensei completed her master’s program at the Graduate School of Education, Yokohama National University. She jump-started her career early, teaching while she was still in university. After graduating, she taught Japanese at a university in northern Thailand, and later continued to teach international students at Japanese language schools, vocational schools, and universities throughout Japan. Since 2012, she has been teaching Japanese language and teaching practical training at Thai Khon Kaen University. Since 2018, she has been an external instructor at ASIA to JAPAN.
