How To Move To Japan For Work: Otaku Stories

Career Guide How To Move To Japan For Work Otaku Success Stories

Why “Otakus” Aim for A Career in Japan

First and foremost, the word “Otaku” is a little bit tricky! Most anime fans outside of Japan will happily call themself an otaku to express their passion for anime and manga. However, in Japan, the word doesn’t particularly refer to anime fans, but to unhealthily obsessive enthusiasts over any specific subject. For this story, we’re referring to anime fans who, admittedly, were a little obsessed to the point that they learned a whole new language and found a way to fly to Japan! So, if you find yourself falling in love with anime, it’s not necessarily unhealthy. Maybe it’s the start of an ambitious dream to work and live in Japan!

In this story, see how your love for anime can be the gateway to an exciting career in Japan. We’ll share real stories of anime lovers who successfully found jobs in Japan, along with some tips from their experience job hunting to get you started on your journey.

Why foreign anime fans love working in Japan

So why did these otakus go beyond and take their fandom to the extreme? The short answer: because Japan is worth it!

1. Living in Japan is like living in a slice-of-life anime.

Imagine walking down the tidy streets of a charming neighborhood every day, meeting up with friends at a cozy cafe, or chilling at a nearby park. Just like the characters in popular slice-of-life anime, living in Japan lets you live out the little cinematic moments you’ve seen onscreen.

2. Your anime heroes who are passionate about work are based on real Japanese people.

Inspired by hardworking anime characters like Mikoto Shiratori from Salaryman’s Club or Dennosuke Uchimura from Headhunted to Another World? When you start working in Japan, you’ll quickly realize that their dedication isn’t fictional but based in reality! You’ll notice this everywhere in Japan — from your daily train rides packed with salarymen in crisp suits to your co-workers who are dedicated to achieving the team’s goal.

3. Ghibli food at the konbini.

If you’ve ever wondered what those delicious-looking dishes in Studio Ghibli classics taste like, you’ll be delighted to know that you can easily find similar dishes at a konbini or a local eatery. Whether you’ve been craving Chihiro’s iconic onigiri from Spirited Away or Ponyo’s comforting bowl of ramen, working in Japan means you can eat just like your favorite anime characters.

4. Love Mecha anime? Japan daily life crawls with robotics.

It’s no secret that Japan boasts a technologically advanced daily life—from high-tech toilet seats to the ultra-efficient Shinkansen. If you’re a mecha anime fan, you’ll quickly notice that mecha culture is deeply embedded in everyday life. You can visit robot-run cafes, explore studios behind iconic mecha anime like the Gundam series and Neon Genesis Evangelion, and even experience giant robot exhibitions. It’s a mecha lover’s dream come true, with technology and anime blending seamlessly into the fabric of daily life.

5. Looking for a romantic life? Take a stroll down sakura-lined parks or visit the historic temple right beside your modern office.

Romanticizing life is easy when you’re living in Japan. Many historic temples and iconic parks are nestled in the heart of the city, just a few minutes’ walk from bustling business districts. Want to experience hanami like your favorite anime characters? Simply grab a picnic blanket, find a spot in the park, and it’s as easy as that!

6. Find the anime merch of your dreams at Akihabara.

Been hunting for that elusive anime collectible? You’ll likely find it in Akihabara, the ultimate destination for anime and manga enthusiasts. The area is home to shops brimming with anime merch, including rare collectibles that might be hard to find anywhere else. When you move to Japan for work, you’ll have plenty of time to stroll through the streets, hunt down that perfect item, or maybe even discover new ones along the way.

7. They discover something they don’t see in anime: Japan is incredibly open to foreign workers!

Many of our successful candidates found that locals are friendly and welcoming to foreign workers. In their experience, Japanese people are eager to share their love for their culture, especially those who share your love for anime! When you move to Japan for work, don’t be shy and strike up a conversation with your co-workers. They’re likely to offer tips on the best spots for anime lovers and more.

8. Working in Japan lets you experience Japan at its fullest.

One of the most common comments from tourists after visiting Japan? “I wish I had more time!” There’s so many nooks and crannies in Japan to explore! Aside from the popular tourist spots however, one of Japan’s best highlights is the quality of life. Japan has kind locals, efficient public transport, universal health care, and other valuable facets transient tourists might miss.

How to Move to Japan For Work as an Anime Fan: Tips From Real Otakus

Moving to Japan for work as an anime fan can feel like a far-fetched dream, but it’s possible. Our FAST OFFER International candidates come from diverse backgrounds across Egypt, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, and more — each found unique inspiration through anime that fueled their journey to securing jobs in Japan.

Also want to move to Japan for work? Here are some practical tips they’ve learned from experience.

Step 1: Imagine yourself working in Japan

Before it becomes a reality, you must first manifest your dreams so they feel within reach. Back in your home country, you may worry that your salary won’t support a life in Japan, especially with the cost of living. But imagine yourself living in Japan, and you’ll realize that the salary structure there is different and more than enough to cover your expenses.

And for motivation, picture living the anime life you’ve always dreamed of, where you’re just a short walk away from anime cafes and experiencing daily life like your favorite characters.

Step 2: Use your love for anime to learn Japanese

There’s nothing quite like watching anime in the original language. For some anime fans, that’s their biggest motivation to learn the language. “At first, I could only follow conversations through subtitles. But the more anime I watched, the more I started recognizing phrases on my own. That inspired me to seek out other resources to improve my Japanese,” shared one anime fan from Malaysia who successfully landed a job in Japan.

Anime fans who move to Japan for work often have a significant advantage: they’re already familiar with common phrases and expressions picked up from years of watching anime. Many also develop an ear for natural intonation, which helps them sound more like native speakers.

Watching anime can serve as a solid foundation for learning Japanese, and some fans take it a step further to deepen their language skills. This approach is known as Anime Language Learning; it’s a method that includes techniques like shadowing (repeating words and phrases to mimic native pronunciation), subtitle-free listening to simulate real-life conversations, and more.

“I love Japanese anime and dramas, so I practiced shadowing to improve my pronunciation and intonation. Since I was using shows I actually enjoyed, it was fun and easy to stay motivated,” shares a successful otaku job seeker from India

Join an anime club

Joining an anime club offers more than just the chance to meet like-minded fans; it can also connect you with people who are equally passionate about learning Japanese. Together, you can practice speaking, share resources, and support each other’s language journey. “While participating in the Otaku Club, I felt a renewed passion for the Japanese language,” shared an anime enthusiast from Myanmar. “In my junior year of college, I began to study Japanese again in earnest, along with my academic work.”

In these clubs, you can also find other Japanese learners to practice speaking with!

Step 3: Secure a job offer from a Japanese company

Landing a job offer to move to Japan for work can feel like a daunting task, but it’s possible!

You can start job hunting for a job in Japan through your university, directly applying to Japanese companies, or going through an agency like FAST OFFER International. Head over to our jobs in Japan for foreigners for a detailed step-by-step guide on working in Japan.

Here are some of our most important take aways about job hunting in Japan:

You Need to Strategically Time Your Job Hunt

Typically, successful applicants sign their contract months before and are scheduled to either join en masse with other new hires in Spring (April) or Autumn (October). This system helps Japanese companies sync training for new hires as well as work with their fiscal calendars. What this means for you is that you need to be strategic in timing your job hunt. Start job hunting as soon as possible expecting the delay. If you want to work straight from college, then job interviews begin during your final year at university. To ace the job interviews, you should have conversational Japanese, an understanding of your Final Year Project, and have some internships under your belt.

You Need to Want to both Work and Live in Japan

Japanese companies will always ask you why you want to work in Japan. It’s important to be honest and examine your true motivation. It’s great to be inspired and motivated by your love for anime–however, it’s not enough. Because Japanese companies want to hire someone who is serious about work, growth, and supporting the company’s vision, you must also have career aspirations in Japan. More than your skill set, Japanese companies will judge whether or not you will fit the company’s vision, culture, and expected longevity in the company.

You can definitely lie to appear more like a company’s perfect employee, but this will only negatively affect you. Either they will detect your deception, or you get the job, quit quickly, and leave Japan. So, just be yourself but make sure that your motives are in the right place.

When asked for tips to fellow Chinese otakus, one candidate shares the same sentiment: “Connect your studies with your desired working role in Japan.” Who knew your passion could help further your career?

Japanese Job Interviews Require Intense Research

Interviews with Japanese companies are a more intricate process than most would be used to. Expect to put a lot of effort into preparation to nail an interview. “Before the interview, I received a set of interview questions from the FAST OFFER International team and practiced speaking exactly what I wanted to say in Japanese according to the questions. I also underwent a mock interview with my teacher’s assistance, which significantly boosted my confidence. Thanks to everyone’s help, I was able to pass the interview without any nervousness,” shared an anime fan candidate from Myanmar

Don’t be Afraid to Try and Try Again

For some anime fans who pursued a career in Japan, the path isn’t as smooth as expected. “After the third and fourth failures, I felt my confidence shrivel up. I could communicate in Japanese well, but I was questioning my skills as an engineer,” shared a candidate from India. “With the help of my FAST OFFER International mentors, we trained for the interviews through one-on-one sessions.” Eventually, the candidate was able to catch the attention of multiple companies. “Imagine my relief when two of the three companies I applied for gave me a job offer.”

Failing is one of the most precious teachers in your job hunt. Sometimes, it’s a skill issue, but sometimes, it’s just also a matter of finding the right company for you. Thankfully, at FAST OFFER International, for as long as you meet the criteria and age limit, you will be given multiple chances and a mentor to help turn every obstacle into a learning experience.

Step 4: Get a work visa in preparation for life in Japan

The key to work visas — landing a job offer!

Once you secure a job offer from a Japanese company, you will get a “Certificate of Eligibility”, the most important requirement for getting a work visa in Japan no matter what country you’re coming from. Requirements for a Japanese work visa differs from country to country so you might want to read our Japan work visa stories to learn more:

You will also have to secure a bank account, apartment, and a phone number in Japan while you wait. All this is easier if you have a dependable and experienced third party agency like FAST OFFER International.

Step 5: Live out your anime dreams working in Japan

Many of our successful otaku candidates are thrilled and excited to start a new chapter in Japan. For many, it’s the realization of a lifelong dream. One candidate even described it as stepping into a real-life anime. She said, “When I arrived at the company, I could never forget that first moment when the doors opened, and I saw the footlockers. I was instantly transported to Attack on Titan: Junior High. I was giddy as I deposited my shoes.”

Some are using the time before starting a new job in Japan to improve their Japanese. “I am currently dedicated to daily preparations for the JLPT N2 exam, ensuring that I am well-prepared for the challenges ahead,” shared a candidate from Myanmar.

For anime fans who also dream of working in Japan, a candidate from India offers this advice: “Never give up! Even if it takes time, your chance will come. If you’re unsure, talk to someone you trust. Getting advice and taking small steps without rushing is the best path forward.”
