What Is Ikigai? Finding Purpose in Work and Life
Ikigai is a broad concept that refers to what brings value and happiness in life. It can also mean hobbies or activities which are the zest of life. Learning Japanese introduced one of our talents to the concept to the concept of ikigai through a book.
“What is your ikigai?” I was once asked. Although I’ve long been fascinated by this intriguing Japanese concept of how having a sense of purpose gives life meaning, I realized, in that moment, that I didn’t have a clear answer yet. I had read books about it, my favorite being Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Héctor García. Yet, despite the reading and reflection, I’m still on the journey to discovering my own ikigai.” Read more: Ikigai and Life Purpose: Finding My Path From India to Japan

How Ikigai Influences Careers in Japan
While ikigai sounds like a simple concept, it is multifaceted. It can be applied not only to your personal life but also to your work. Think of it as a mix of what you love to do and what you can also integrate into your work.
“Japanese companies value the spirit of “Ikigai” (生きがい), or the joy of living by doing what you love. It is about making a living over something you are passionate about. My passion is software-related work, and my future goal is to develop products that are useful to society as a software engineer. This concept of ikigai was in line with my view of work.” Read more: My Ikigai: To Be A Software Engineer in the Japanese Tech Industry

What Is Kaizen? The Power of Continuous Improvement
Kaizen, or 改善, is a Japanese philosophy that means ‘change for the better.’ It refers to the process of continuously improving different aspects. The concept of Kaizen is especially used at work to improve processes related to manufacturing and re-engineering.
“I learned of this Japanese philosophy “Kaizen” that’s about slow incremental change leading to vast improvements in the long run. I applied this cultural learning with my Japanese studies, too, as I made a habit of learning 10-20 Japanese words daily. Over time, 10-20 words a day translated in a big way.” Read more: Learning Japanese Culture Through Language Inspired My Career in Japan

What Is Wabi-Sabi? Embracing Imperfection in Life and Work
Wabi sabi is the concept of finding beauty in imperfection and simplicity rooted in Buddhism.
“While we (my friend and I) were talking about Japanese culture, what left the strongest impression on me was the unique Japanese ideas of wabi-sabi (the practice of finding beauty in imperfection) and kaizen (being committed to continuous day-by-day progress).”
“After I learned about these Japanese concepts, I read a book called Wabi Sabi: Japanese Wisdom for a Perfectly Imperfect Life to learn more about Japanese culture.
