Helpful JLPT Tips to Pass the Exams Beyond Your Japanese Skills

So you’ve worked hard learning Japanese, and you finally feel ready to take the JLPT exam. But apart from testing your Japanese skills, there are other things to ensure you’re in the best condition to pass the JLPT!

How to Pass the JLPT: Avoid These Common Exam Errors

  • Poor time management
  • Overthinking grammar questions
  • Misreading listening prompts
  • Failing to understand question patterns
  • Neglecting vocabulary review
  • Panicking during the exam

Don’t worry! You can avoid all these common mistakes through preparing and practising.

Lesson 2 From Your AtoJ Hirameki Sensei: Helpful JLPT Tips to Pass the Exams Beyond Your Japanese Skills

JLPT Study Tips

  1. Set aside time to study specifically for JLPT every day. Test-taking is a different skill set from your ability to learn Japanese.
  2. Take mock exams to familiarize yourself with the test format and question types. JLPT publishes past exams and practice questions through official workbooks, or you can find JLPT sample questions on their website to practice with.
  3. Work on your weaknesses. Note your results during your self-administered exams to put extra effort into improving your weaknesses. Among the three sections (listening, reading, and grammar), which do you find hardest and how can you improve?
  4. Don’t let anxiety in! Immerse yourself in Japanese media you like to associate the language with relaxing activities. Continue to gamify your learning process. Don’t let your nerves get the better of you.
  5. Improve your reading speed. Perhaps the biggest contributor to how quickly you take the exam is your reading speed. Read materials according to your JLPT level to increase your reading speed.

JLPT Test Taking Strategies

Listening Tips

  1. Read the choices before the audio starts.  Use prep time wisely. Predict what kind of answer you’re listening for (reason, location, opinion, number, etc.).
  2. Focus on keywords, not every word.  You don’t need to understand 100%. Listen for topic words, verbs, and contrast markers like でも, しかし, やっぱり.
  3. Don’t panic if you miss something. Many students lose focus after missing one word. Stay calm and keep listening — the answer often comes at the end.
  4. Watch for traps.  JLPT often mentions incorrect options first, then corrects them. The final decision is usually the key.
  5. Practice with one-time audio. Train yourself to listen only once — just like the real test.

Reading Tips

  1. Don’t translate everything. Scan for keywords in the question, then find matching information in the text.
  2. Manage your time carefully. Long passages can drain time. If stuck, mark it and move on.
  3. Pay attention to contrast words. Words like しかし, そのため, 一方で often signal the author’s main point.
  4. Understand the question type. Is it asking for the main idea, a specific detail, or the author’s opinion? Identify this first.
  5. Practice speed reading. The JLPT reading section is as much about speed as comprehension.

Grammar Tips

  1. Study grammar in context. Memorizing definitions isn’t enough — understand how patterns are used in real sentences.
  2. Learn similar grammar differences. JLPT loves testing confusing pairs (ように vs ために, らしい vs そうだ).
  3. Watch verb forms carefully. Many wrong answers look correct, but use the wrong tense or conjugation.
  4. Review particles thoroughly. Small particle mistakes (は vs が, に vs で) are a common point killer.
  5. Don’t overthink grammar questions. Grammar questions should be answered quickly — don’t overthink simple ones.

JLPT Exam Day Advice

  1. Make sure to sleep well the night before the exam. Not only does lack of sleep cause your IQ to drop, but full, quality sleep also helps your brain consolidate all your learning.
  2. Eat a light meal before your exam. Your brain needs energy! Just be careful not to overeat to the point of sleepiness.
  3. Wear an analog watch to help you keep track of time. Digital watches are forbidden from the testing area, and not all rooms will have clocks.
  4. Bring light snacks for the break. Testing can be exhausting. You won’t be allowed to go out during the break, so make sure to bring snacks. Candies like chocolates can provide you with a much-needed sugar boost.
  5. Don’t bring a pen. You must only use a pencil to answer the exam. Avoid making the mistake by leaving your pen at home.
  6. Don’t leave blanks! If you’re running out of time, make sure you don’t leave any blanks.

Want to work in Japan? What You Need Beyond JLPT Certification

If you’re progressing with your language learning journey because of a dream to work in Japan, then you need to know that there’s more to the job hunt than the JLPT certificate. For one, the exam typically doesn’t measure your conversational ability, which is arguably more important during the Japanese interviews. Another important thing to remember is knowing what companies you should be applying to, which you’ll only figure out during company research. If you need assistance with the job hunt, check out our FAQ to see how we can help you.
