It’s a common challenge for Japanese learners hoping to one day work in Japan: “There’s no one who speaks Japanese in my home country!” Over the years though, we’ve also heard a lot of inspiring stories of students who found creative ways to meet Japanese natives from where they are. After all, practicing your Japanese conversation skills is a key part in getting ready for Japanese job interviews! With a little creativity and a big dose of friendliness, here’s five different ways to find Japanese speakers so you can practice speaking Japanese without living in Japan:
5 Offline Ways to Practice Japanese Without Living in Japan
Join a Japanese culture club
“While participating in the Otaku Club, I felt a renewed passion for the Japanese language” –“How To Move To Japan For Work: Otaku Stories.”
Joining a club with physical events will surely lead to meeting people who will be more than willing to practice speaking Japanese with you. Not only that, you’ll be motivated to keep your Japanese learning momentum going!
Attend Japanese cultural fairs that might be happening at your university or area
Follow the Japan Foundation or Japan embassy from your country and you might find some exciting events such as festivals, tea ceremony workshops near you. You can also attend anime conventions that will allow you to pursue your passion along side learning. Going to these events will expose you to event organizers who can speak Japanese or new friends who share your passion.
Choose a part-time job or internship in the tourism industry.
Try being a tour guide, working at a tourist-heavy restaurant, or with a company that works with tourists on the regular. These will give you plenty of opportunities to speak to Japanese tourists. Just be careful! Your job, after all, might be affected positively or negatively.
Visit your country’s Mini Tokyo.
As immigrant communities grow, the demand for authentic immigrant cuisine grows along side them, leading to different ethnic enclaves with a concentrated immigrant population. There are Japantowns all over the world with Japanese restaurants owned by Japanese natives. If you want a better chance to interact and converse with the Japanese natives in the shop, make sure to go there at less busy hours so you don’t disrupt their work flow.
Join a physical Japanese Class (and form a study group).
Perhaps the best place to find an expert and people with common goals to practice with is an in-person classroom! Aside from the class hour lessons, making friends with your classmates is a great study and practice group pipeline. You can also befriend your teachers for some friendly and educational conversations. If you’re based in India, A2J Hirameki might be the perfect option for you.
